How To Give

The 1764 Society
The Brown Annual Fund's Most Loyal Donors

The 1764 Society was established in 2005 to provide much-deserved recognition to those donors on whom the University can count to contribute to the Annual Fund each and every year. Named for Brown's founding year, the 1764 Society celebrates these loyal members of our community in three categories:

• Donors who have given in each of the past 5-9 consecutive fiscal years.

Members receive a commemorative “five year” lapel pin upon reaching five consecutive  fiscal years of giving.

• Donors who have given in each of the past 10-24 consecutive fiscal years.

Members receive a commemorative “ten year” lapel pin upon reaching ten consecutive years of giving.

• Donors who have given every year for the past 25 fiscal years or more.

Members will receive special recognition upon reaching twenty-five consecutive years of giving.

Notes on Determining Membership

  • Brown Annual Fund recognition is based on the total of gifts, pledge payments, and matching gifts received in a single fiscal year (July 1 through June 30). Unpaid pledges are not included.
  • Couples are recognized for the combined total of their contributions.
  • Gifts designated to areas of the University other than the Brown Annual Fund are appreciated, but are not considered when determining membership in The 1764 Society.
  • The University is in the process of ensuring that donors who reached milestone giving levels (five years, ten years, or twenty-five years) prior to the establishment of The 1764 Society in fiscal year 2005-2006 receive the appropriate recognition for their generosity. Kate Rohnstrom, Assistant Director of the Brown Annual Fund, is available to answer any questions about your recognition at 401-863-3803.
  • Once achieved, membership in The 1764 Society will continue until a fiscal year passes in which the member does not make a gift to the Brown Annual Fund. Former members can rejoin The 1764 Society after resuming their support of the Brown Annual Fund for five consecutive years.

Spotlight: Frances Van Keuren PhD’73

Brown University has proven to be more than an alma mater for Frances Van Keuren PhD’73. The University has figured prominently throughout her professional career. After obtaining her doctorate from Brown in Classics with a concentration in Classical Archaeology, Frances left College Hill, but maintained close ties to the institution and faculty members who shaped her development. Now a professor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, Frances has fostered an even greater appreciation of a Brown education. “Brown provides opportunities for intellectual growth that many institutions cannot afford,” she said. “The University’s small class sizes allow faculty to work closely with undergraduate and graduate students, forging close relationships in which confidence and independence can flourish.”

Frances returned to Brown as a visiting scholar in 2002, where she audited geology classes with Professor L. Peter Gromet and Professor Emeritus Terry Tullis while researching the marbles of Roman sarcophagi at the RISD Museum. In addition to her classroom and laboratory work, Frances’ research benefited greatly from Brown’s libraries. She has also nurtured a longstanding relationship with her dissertation director, Professor Emeritus R. Ross Holloway.

A member of the 1764 Society, the Brown Annual Fund’s cadre of loyal supporters, Frances knows that Brown’s continued excellence depends greatly on the participation of its donors. “I try to give generously to Brown every year, because the level of quality that is maintained here requires solid funding,” she said. “The University has continued to play a role in my career. This kind of commitment to students who have completed their studies and gone on to become academicians themselves is rare; but a sincere interest in the success of each alumnus is the norm at Brown.”
