Brown professors are actively engaged researchers whose work places them at the forefront of their fields. Brown hired 49 new faculty members during the 2006-2007 academic year, bringing the total number of regular faculty to 658. This represents an increase of 15% since the initiation of the Plan for Academic Enrichment, and the largest faculty in the University’s 243-year history. The total amount budgeted for faculty salaries has risen by more than 50% in five years, reflecting both the hiring of incremental faculty and improvements in the salaries of continuing faculty.
