How To Give
Recruiting and Retaining World-Class Faculty
Brown professors are actively engaged researchers whose work places them at the forefront of their fields. Brown students learn directly from these renowned teachers and mentors—through lectures that challenge, discussions that inspire, and texts that encourage new ways of thinking. The University’s quality and reputation begin with its faculty who stretch academic boundaries and empower students to develop their own innovative ideas.
Brown hired 49 new faculty members during the 2006-2007 academic year, bringing the total number of regular faculty to 658. This represents an increase of 15% since the initiation of the Plan for Academic Enrichment, and the largest faculty in the University’s 243-year history. The total amount budgeted for faculty salaries has risen by more than 50% in five years, reflecting both the hiring of incremental faculty and improvements in the salaries of continuing faculty.
Your Brown Annual Fund gift supports these academic leaders in their teaching and research.

“The challenges and rewards of teaching at Brown begin with my students, who look at the world and think about their work from several perspectives, without a sense of limitation. I have learned many new and valuable lessons about my own field from these young minds, who abandon a passive approach to learning in favor of an active pursuit of knowledge. Brown faculty also have unparalleled opportunities to collaborate on research projects with brilliant colleagues in their own departments and across disciplines.”

Professor of Biology

"The academic life really sings when your teaching and your research come together. At most universities, you hope to find this continuity - if you're lucky - in a graduate seminar. At Brown, it happens all the time in the undergraduate classroom. Bring a difficult text to the table, and the students cannot wait to open it. Assign a controversial article, and they are ready to critique it. Mention the book you've just finished, and they are eager to read it. No wonder Brown faculty enjoy their teaching!"
