How To Give

The Senior Class Gift is our class’ first opportunity to come together to give back to our University in honor of our time at Brown.  Many seniors choose to make their gifts in honor of professors and coaches who have had a positive impact on their Brown experience.  Volunteers ask their classmates to make gifts to the Brown Annual Fund and, if they are student-athletes, also to the Brown Sports Foundation.  The Class of 2007’s goal is to have at least 70% of the class participate in the Class Gift, which will set a new University record (the Class of 2005 holds the participation record of 68FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Brown Annual Fund (BAF)?
During our time at Brown, tens of thousands of alumni, parents and friends have helped to make our experience possible by making gifts to the Brown Annual Fund. Since 1914 the Brown Annual Fund has been primary vehicle through which alumni and alumnae support Brown, and its students and participate in the University's educational mission.

The current-use dollars made available by Brown Annual Fund donors are a key component of the University’s operating budget each and every year.  This year the Annual Fund’s goals are to raise $31.5 million from 34,000 donors.  These gifts will help fund the initiatives of the Plan for Academic Enrichment which include:

  • Providing financial aid for undergraduate and graduate students

  • Supporting and expanding the faculty

  • Improving library and technology resources

  • Enhancing the student living and learning experience

What is the Brown Sports Foundation (BUSF)?

The Brown Sports Foundation is committed to influencing the lives of Brown's talented scholar-athletes in a direct and positive way.  The Sports Foundation raises funds for both endowment and current annual-use in support of the 37 varsity and 7 club sports at Brown.

In addition, BUSF also provides fundraising support for athletic facilities and equipment projects (Pizzitola Sports Center, Marston Boathouse renovation, new general use fitness equipment in OMAC, etc.), for unrestricted athletic support, for Women's Athletics, and for special trips and projects. But it's not just our Division I athletes who reap the benefits of BUSF's fundraising efforts; the entire Brown community enjoys the improved intramural and University fitness programs and enhanced facilities that result from donations to the Brown Sports Foundation.

What is the Brown Annual Fund/Brown Sports Foundation Partnership?

Senior-athletes have the opportunity to support outstanding athletics and academics at Brown by splitting their gifts between the Annual Fund and Sports Foundation.

Why should I give back when I just paid full tuition and/or had to take out student loans to pay for my education?
Believe it or not, tuition covers only about half the cost of a Brown education.  Even when you pay full tuition—while at Brown or by repaying your student loans after graduation—you have benefited from the generosity of past and present donors whose gifts supported your Brown experience.

Some alumni are giving thousands or even millions of dollars.  Will my contribution really make a difference?
Yes, your gift will make a difference at Brown. It will provide direct support to students and professors. It will send a signal to alumni, parents adn the rest of the Brown community that you value your education and will inspire them to give, too. By joining together with your classmates, you will have an even greater impact. By combining your class' gift with gifts from over 30,000 Annual Fund donors, you will be a part of providing financial aid to undergraduate and graduate students, increasing funding to recruit and retain outstanding faculty, adding to the University's library and technology resources, and enhancing the student living and learning experience.

Why should I give back when I already pay full tuition, or I have student loans?

Believe it or not, tuition does not represent the true cost of a Brown education; it covers only about half the cost of educating a Brown student.  Thus, even when you pay full tuition – now or by repaying student loans after graduation, Brown significantly subsidizes your education – and can do this only through the generosity of past and present donors.

Don’t other causes need my money more than Brown?

There are many, many worthy causes to support and members of the Brown community generously contribute to a wide range of causes—humanitarian, social, political, religious, environmental, cultural, medical, and educational.  We encourage you to support the causes about which you feel passionately.  We hope that Brown is on that list.  Your gift will support the University’s critically important mission—to educate and prepare students who go on to leadership roles in their communities, their professions, and society and to engage in research that expands human knowledge and addresses pressing social issues. Brown relies on a limited community of potential supporters—our students, alumni, and their parents.  These are also the individuals who best understand the impact of the University’s teaching and research on our students, the community, and society at large.
