Meet the BMAA Executive Committee

BMAA

The BMAA is pleased to announce the newly elected BMAA Executive Committee Members. Join us in congratulating these dedicated alums.

Phil Wey

President: Philip Wey ’82 MD’86

Dr. Wey is a plastic surgeon with the private practice, Plastic Surgery Arts of New Jersey in Princeton and New Brunswick, NJ, and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He graduated from the combined medical program at Brown and Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Wey received general surgery training at Northwestern University, completed a plastic surgery residency at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center (NY Presbyterian – Cornell), and two fellowships in breast surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and microsurgery at NYU’s Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

Preetha Basaviah

President Elect: Preetha Basaviah ’91 MD’95

Dr. Basaviah is clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford University, where she serves as assistant dean for pre-clerkship education, director of the Practice of Medicine Course for Stanford medical students, an educator for CARE (Compassion, Advocacy, Respect, Advocacy), and as an inpatient and outpatient attending. She completed her internal medicine residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, where she was among the institution's first hospitalists as well as one of the primary care chief residents at the West Roxbury Veteran’s Administration in her last year.

Lisa Goldstein

Secretary: Lisa Goldstein ’78 MD’82

Dr. Goldstein is assistant pathologist at The Miriam Hospital and a clinical assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Brown University. After graduating from the Brown University Program in Medicine, Dr. Goldstein completed her residency in pathology at Rhode Island Hospital in 1986, serving as the chief resident during her final year. She completed a fellowship in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1987.



Steven Shin

Treasurer: Steven Shin ’95 MMS’97 MD’99

Dr. Shin is an orthopaedic hand surgeon and partner at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. He is on the clinical faculty of the Kerlan-Jobe Sports Medicine Fellowship. In addition to his medical degree, he received his undergraduate and MMS degrees from Brown. He performed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City and his fellowship in hand and upper limb surgery at Stanford University.

$19.5M Grant Helps to Accelerate Delivery of Research Breakthroughs to Patient Care

With a new five-year federal grant, the Rhode Island Center for Clinical Translational Science (RI-CCTS) will strengthen connections between scientific discovery and health around the state. The grant will allow RI-CCTS to create the educational and technical infrastructure needed to spur Rhode Island researchers to design, conduct, and analyze more medical studies — including treatment trials — that build on basic research. Dr. William Hall, MD presenter of the Frank and Joan Rothman lecture reviewed highly effective strategies for adding life to the years and tips for aging successfully. Read More

In 1992, a time when only 8 percent of general surgeons nationally were women, Signs & Symptoms, ran a cover story about Brown’s women medical students and residents going into surgery. Nearly 15 years later these four self-named "girl surgeons" are still leading in their fields. Read More

Dr. Edward Akelman ADE’95 hon., P’09, P’10 named chief of orthopedics

Dr. Edward Ankleman was named chief of the department of orthopedics at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, chair of the department of orthopedics at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Vincent Zecchino professor of orthopedics.
