Brown admitted 8.7 percent of applicants, accepting 2,692 students from 79 countries for the Class of 2015. The University received a record-high 30,946 applications, a 3 percent increase over last year. The 8.7 percent acceptance rate is the lowest in Brown's history. China, India, United Kingdom, Korea, and Canada rank at the top of international student acceptances.

Greek scientist Nikos Pelekanos SCM '87 PHD'92 received the Solar Innovation 2010 prize for his proposal "III-V nanowires for next generation photovoltaics." The prize is awarded by the French Atomic Energy Commission and includes funding and technical support to carry out research proposals for three years.

Alex Fitzgibbons '94,  owner of upscale party planning company Fait Accompli in London, organized and catered Prince William and Princess Catherine's wedding reception at Buckingham Palace. Fait Accompli has been in charge of numerous high-visibility functions for British royalty dating back to Princess Diana's days.

Ih-Ming Chan '04 was appointed as regional director for the Western United States, Western Canada, and Central America by the Singapore Economic Development Board, a government agency that plans and executes strategies to shape the future of Singapore's economy.

International Brown Clubs recently hosted the following Brown faculty: Vice President for International Affairs Matthew Gutmann P'14 in Beijing and Shanghai; Professor of Neuroscience Diane Lipscombe and Professor of Medical Science Edward Hawrot in Rio de Janeiro; and Professor Emeritus of Classics and History Kurt Raaflaub in Paris.

Albert Harkness graduated from Brown in 1842 as the valedictorian of his class. He studied in Germany and received his Ph.D. in Bonn in 1854. From 1855 until his retirement in 1892, he was professor of Greek at Brown and published 14 Latin textbooks. He was a founder of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.

Annual International Reception at Brown
The Office of International Advancement hosted its annual reception for nearly 300 graduating international students and their families and international alumni/ae in reunion on May 28 at Rochambeau House. During the reception, members of the Brown International Scholarship Committee (BISC) spoke about the scholarships for which they are raising funds. These scholarships provide financial aid for talented international students from around the world to attend Brown. View BISC's inaugural newsletter.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos P'12 Lectures at Brown

On April 5, prior to going to Washington D.C. to meet with President Barack Obama, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos P'12 delivered the Stephen A. Ogden Jr.'60 Memorial Lecture on International Affairs in the De Ciccio Family Auditorium at the Salomon Center for Teaching. During his talk titled "Why People Should Give More than a Damn About Latin America," President Santos urged the United States to look to Latin America as a strategic partner in the coming years. Provost David Kertzer '69 P'95 P'98 Travels to Europe
In March, Provost David Kertzer '69 P'95 P'98 traveled to London and Rome where he met with alumni/ae and parents, updating them on Brown's activities and asking them for their continued support of the University. Lord and Lady Sassoon P'13 hosted lunch in his honor at their home in London. Provost Kertzer delivered a lecture titled "Libraries, Archives, and the Joys of Research" hosted by the Brown Club of the United Kingdom at the British Library. He spoke about Mussolini and the Pope (Pius XI 1922-1939) at a lecture in Rome hosted by the Brown Club of Italy.

Brown Marks 50th Anniversary of Gagarin's Orbital Flight
On April 12, the Department of Geological Sciences hosted a public forum in MacMillan Hall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's orbital flight of Earth. Participating in the Forum were James Head, professor of geological sciences; Sergei Khrushchev, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute and son of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev; Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders; Sasha Basilevsky, a visiting professor at Brown from Russia's V.I. Vernadsky Institute; and author Ronald Grelsamer.

Brown Hosts Major Exhibition of Haitian Art
In collaboration with Rhode Island School of Design and the Waterloo Center for the Arts, Brown recently hosted a multivenue exhibition titled Re-Framing Haiti: Art, History and Performativity. In conjunction with the exhibit—showcasing more than 100 works of Haitian art—the University hosted five visiting Haitian artists, some of whose works were on display, for public lectures and workshops.

Carolyn Dean Named Interim Director of the Watson Institute
Carolyn Dean, senior associate dean of the faculty and John Hay Professor of International Studies, will become interim director of the Watson Institute for International Studies effective July 1. She will serve for one year while the University searches for a permanent director for the institute. The current director, Michael Kennedy, announced his resignation in March.

Bill Rhodes '57 LHD'05 Authors Banker to the World
Bill Rhodes '57 LHD'05, professor-at-large at the Watson Institute, recently authored Banker to the World: Leadership Lessons From the Front Lines of Global Finance, in which he shares his 50 years of experience in international finance. 

Timothy Flanigan Leads Brown Delegation to Ukraine
In March, at the invitation of ANTIAIDS Foundation established by Elena Pinchuk P'14 in Ukraine, three Brown faculty members under the leadership of Timothy Flanigan, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases, traveled to Kiev and Lviv. They met experts in HIV medicine at various institutions including Kiev Hospital and National Pediatric HIV Hospital to explore possible future collaborations to improve the care of children infected with HIV and AIDS in Ukraine.

Cynthia Garcia Coll Speaks at Bahcesehir University in Turkey
In April, Cynthia Garcia Coll, the Robinson and Barstow Professor of Education, Psychology, and Pediatrics, spoke at the conference on the Role of Family in Child Education at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, Turkey. Her topics included "The Role of Parents in Educating Children" and "How to Raise a Successful Adolescent."

Susan Yue '12 Wins Truman Scholarship
One of only 60 students in the United States to win a prestigious Truman Scholarship this year, Susan Yue '12, who grew up in China, will receive $30,000 toward graduate study. The Harry Truman Scholarship Foundation awards the scholarship to a student who has an extensive record of public and community service, has outstanding leadership potential, and is committed to a career in government or public service.

Brown Students Organize a Relief Concert for Japan and a Forum on Nuclear Energy
On March 20, the Japanese Cultural Association (JCA), a Brown student organization, organized an event titled "Pray for Japan: Earthquake Relief Concert" in the Salomon Center for Teaching to raise awareness of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The JCA also organized a forum titled "The Future of Nuclear Energy: Lessons from Japan" on April 22 - Earth Day - at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Brown Students to Study Language Abroad
Eleven Brown students have been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study foreign languages abroad over the summer. They will spend seven-to-ten weeks in intensive language institutes in China, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Tajikistan, Tunisia, and Turkey.

Brown Students to Participate Global Summer Internships
During the summer, twelve Brown students will participate in internships at various companies and educational institutions in China, India, and Spain, including Ajia Partners Ltd (Hong Kong), Arshiya International Ltd (Mumbai), and the business school Instituto Empresa (Madrid)—with which Brown has launched a joint Executive MBA Program. Internships in China and India are sponsored by Brown alumni, parents, and friends.

The University of Cape Town Opera School Members Perform at Brown
On June 8 and 10, members of the University of Cape Town Opera School in South Africa performed The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart in the Martinos Auditorium in the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. The performance was sponsored by Brown's Cogut Center for the Humanities and was attended by the participants of the Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI)—a major faculty development initiative for young scholars from the global south—and by representatives of Santander Universities, which funds BIARI.
