Lecturer of French Studies Youenn Kervennic will speak about his next book Le Routard En Smoking Blanc, a travelogue.

Brown Institute for Brain Science Director John Donoghue PHD '79 P'09 P'12 MD'16 will deliver a lecture titled "Turning Thoughts to Action: Restoring Movement to the Paralyzed." Professor Donoghue was recently interviewed about his research on ABC Radio National in Australia. Download the MP3 here.

Also, Professor Donoghue and Professor of Medical Science Justin Fallon will travel to Istanbul in June.

Provost David Kertzer '69 P'95 P'98 will speak about "Libraries, Archives, and the Joys of Research."

Facts About Brown

Brown received 31,000 applications for the Class of 2015, a three-percent increase over last year. Brown also received a record number of international applications from 4,800 students representing 139 countries. The top five countries represented are China, Korea, India, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Alumni News & Notes

Norman Eisen '85 assumed his post as U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic in January. Previously, he was President Obama's special adviser for ethics and government reform.

Pierre-Alexis Dumas '91, chief creative officer of Hermes, recently visited campus and spoke about the creation of his new project Hermes Editeur, which launched in 2008. Dumas gave his lecture in the Martinos Auditorium of the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts.

Hyun Sang Cho '94, executive vice president of Hyosung Corporation in Korea, was named a member of the G20 Initiative, a group of about 40 young global leaders from countries representing the world's major economies.

Eunice Yoon '95 has been promoted to Beijing correspondent for CNN Worldwide. She was previously CNN's Asia business editor, based in Hong Kong.

International Brown Clubs recently hosted the following Brown faculty: Professor of History James McClain in Tokyo; Senior Lecturer of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies Barbara Tannenbaum in Mumbai; Professor of History of Art and Architecture Dietrich Neumann in Istanbul; Lecturer of French Studies Youenn Kervennic in Paris; and Professor Emeritus of Classics and History Kurt Raaflaub in Geneva.

Alumni History Corner

The First Brown Graduates around the World
Don Geronimo Urmeneta, Class of 1835 and Brown's first alumnus from Latin America, became secretary of finance and senator in his home country, Chile. He also planted the first large vineyard of French grapes in Chile and became one of the founders of the country's modern wine industry.

Brown's first Japanese student, Julius Kumpei Matsumoto, earned a master's degree in 1894. He later became a member of the Japanese parliament and remembered Brown with a gift to the University Library of his books and journals.

Sang-kyu Pack, Class of 1905, was the first Korean student at Brown. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate, he returned to Korea and became a prominent businessman, banker, and landowner. In the 1940s, Pack was a member of the Representative Democratic Council of Korea.

The Plan for Academic Enrichment

Campaign for Academic Enrichment

The Campaign for Academic Enrichment is the most successful fundraising effort in Brown's history, raising $1.61 billion in gifts and pledges—115 percent of the $1.4 billion goal. Brown's international alumni/ae, parents, and friends gave more than $115 million to the Campaign. The University will continue its ongoing efforts to expand the faculty, enhance student living and learning, and transform the campus. Brown seeks support to implement an international need-blind admission policy; to build and renovate dormitories; and to strengthen engineering, global health, brain sciences, and international programs, among other priorities.

Brown Considering Recommendations to Improve Services for International Students
Brown is considering a number of recommendations by students and administrators to improve services for international students. The University has been evaluating the current support system to identify ways to better assist students during their transitions to Brown. Under the leadership of Chris Collins '11, chair of the Undergraduate Council of Students Admissions and Student Services Committee, Michael Lin '14, Sam Yang '14, and Lixian Wang '14 analyzed the support system for international students and proposed a number of initiatives to enhance the overall college experience.

In Memoriam: Ambassador Richard Holbrooke '62 LLD'97
The Brown community mourns the passing of Richard Holbrooke '62 LLD'97, who was a commanding figure on the world stage and an engaged member of the Brown community. A distinguished diplomat in various roles, he was most recently appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. He had been a Brown professor-at-large at the Watson Institute for International Studies since 2007.

In February, a memorial ceremony called "A Life Remembered" took place in his honor at the United Nations and included remarks by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The Richard Holbrooke Fund for International Affairs has been established at Brown. Those wishing to make gifts in his memory may do so at http://gifts.brown.edu.

The Brown University Annual Report for fiscal year 2009-2010 was recently published. It includes financial statements and features Brown faculty and students in a variety of disciplines who are undertaking groundbreaking research using a range of advanced technologies. View the annual report here.

John Hay Library Centennial Celebration
Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York and former president of Brown from 1989 to 1997, was the guest speaker at the March 17 John Hay Library Centennial celebration in Sayles Hall. He delivered a lecture titled "Information and Knowledge in an Age of Technology."

Brown in Davos
During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Simmons moderated the panel "The Rise and Decline of Language" and hosted a reception for 100 Brown alumni/ae, parents, and friends, staffed by Vice President for International Advancement Ron Margolin, Vice President for International Affairs Matthew Gutmann P'14, and Regional Director for International Advancement Vijay Chitnis '94.

Year of China at Brown
Brown will celebrate the Year of China during the 2011-2012 academic year to advance understanding of China's people, culture, history, economy, and politics, and to examine its current and future role on the world stage. During the year-long celebration, sponsored by the Office of International Affairs and led by Professor of Physics Chung-I Tan, a series of public events, lectures, and activities will take place on campus and elsewhere.

Brown in Mexico
Vice President for International Affairs Matthew Gutmann P'14 and Regional Director for International Affairs Josh Taub '93 recently traveled to Mexico City to explore further cooperation between Brown and Mexican universities, meeting with senior administrators at Colegio de Mexico, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana to discuss student and faculty exchanges and joint research initiatives. They also attended a forum on education hosted by Santander Universities Mexico with presidents from the top 30 universities in Mexico and Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa and a dinner hosted by the Brown Club of Mexico and its president Ignacio Madrazo '91. Vice President Gutmann gave a lecture on his current research in anthropology for Brown alumni/ae, friends, and the press at the National Archives of Mexico.

The Cogut Center for the Humanities

Mellon Grant Funds New Global Humanities Program at Brown
The Cogut Center for the Humanities will launch the global program "Brown in the World/The World at Brown," with a nearly half-million-dollar grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The program will provide leading future scholars and professors of the humanities with international exposure and the opportunity to enhance their global perspectives and networks.

Achebe Colloquium: Calling Attention to African Issues
In December 2010, Brown sponsored the second annual Achebe Colloquium on Africa, convening scholars and diplomats for a seminar on the importance of strengthening democracy on the African continent. Organized by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and professor of Africana studies at Brown, the colloquium focused on issues of Rwanda, Congo, and Nigeria, with topics including democracy, genocide, corruption, and the environmental crisis in the regions.

Italian Studies Colloquium at Brown
On February 25, the Department of Italian Studies and the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, in collaboration with the Comitato per il Centenario Bobbio of Turin, Italy, presented "Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004): Ethics and Democracy. A Seminar" at the Cogut Center for the Humanities.

John Carter Brown Library Exhibits Rare Books on the Philippines 
In December 2010, the John Carter Brown Library presented "The History of Printing in the Philippines." The exhibit featured rare books from 17th-18th century Philippines and was prepared by student curators Bruce Gutierrez '11 and Jean Mendoza '12.

Gordon Wood P'86 GP'11

Gordon Wood P'86 GP'11 Receives National Humanities Medal
Gordon Wood, the Alva O. Way University Professor and professor of history emeritus, was awarded the National Humanities Medal for his scholarship by President Obama during a White House ceremony on March 2. A preeminent scholar of the Revolution and the early Republic, Professor Wood has been teaching at Brown since 1969.

   
Professor Lawrence Larson

Lawrence Larson Named Dean of the School of Engineering
Lawrence Larson, currently chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California at San Diego, was recently named inaugural dean of the School of Engineering. He will begin his duties in July 2011. Professor Larson is an expert in microelectronics technology and wireless communications. The University elevated the Division of Engineering to a School of Engineering last year.

Ashutosh Varshney Urges the United Nations to Include India on Its Security Council
In November 2010, as President Omaba was starting his visit to India, Professor of Political Science Ashutosh Varshney urged the United Nations to give India a permanent seat on the Security Council. In his article titled "Memo to Obama: Back India to join the UN's club" in the Financial Times, Professor Varshney wrote that doing so "will also begin the process of founding a new world order, where power will also be a function of political values, not simply of military and economic might."

Middle Eastern Experts Discuss Egypt
In January, Middle Eastern experts at Brown-including Melani Cammett '91, associate professor of political science and director of the Middle East Studies program-spoke about the current uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt during a forum at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Brown Students at the Climate Change Conference in Cancun
Ten Brown students attended the United Nations talks on global climate change in Cancun, Mexico, with Timmons Roberts, director of the Center for Environmental Studies and professor of sociology. During the conference, Spencer Lawrence '11 spoke with Monica Andrade, a member of the executive secretariat of the Latin American Platform of Climate Change, an organization with which Brown has forged a partnership to promote progress on climate change in the region and worldwide.

Program in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME) Students Travel to Portugal and Spain
In January, PRIME students-led by Professors of Engineering Angus Kingon and Eric Suuberg-traveled to Lisbon, Porto, and Madrid. In Lisbon and Porto, they visited companies and economic development organizations. In Madrid, they attended lectures on Spain and European issues at Instituto Empresa-one of Europe's leading business schools with which Brown has a partnership-and visited several companies, including Telefonica and Iberdrola.
 
Andrew Furnas '11

Andrew Furnas '11 Awarded Marshall Scholarship
Mathematics concentrator Andrew Furnas '11 has been awarded a 2011 Marshall Scholarship, which supports graduate study in the United Kingdom. He is one of only 31 U.S. students to receive the award this year.

Collaborations & Partnerships

Brown Faculty Workshop at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul
In January, faculty members from the Brown Institute for Brain Science, including Professor of Medical Science Justin Fallon, conducted the Suna Kiraç Workshop on Neurodegenerative Disease for students at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. Funds established by the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation provide support for collaborations and student exchange between Brown and Bogaziçi University in neurodegenerative disease and for research efforts in the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

 

Brown Plus One-An International Master's Program
Brown has collaborated with the University of Edinburgh and the Chinese University of Hong Kong to establish an international program called "Brown Plus One," which begins this year. The program allows Brown students to spend one or two semesters at a partner university during their junior year. After earning a bachelor's degree from Brown, students can study a fifth year to earn a Master of Arts degree at the partner university.

 

IE Brown Executive MBA Program Starts
On March 6, a convocation was held in Pembroke Hall for the inaugural class of Brown's joint MBA program with Spain's Instituto de Empresa. In his keynote speech, Brown Trustee Craig Cogut '75 P'11 P'13 shared vignettes of recent encounters with prominent business professionals who value knowledge of the humanities. Leaders of the new program, including Brown and Instituto de Empresa faculty members, touted the unique nature of this liberal arts-focused MBA. The 15-month program, which is predominantly online, calls for seven weeks of "face-to-face" learning opportunities in Providence and Madrid.
