Facts About Brown

Of the 28,671 applicants to the Class of 2016, 16 percent are international. This year's total applications included 25,744 regular decision and 2,927 early decision, making this the third-largest pool of applicants in Brown's history.

Alumni/ae News & Notes

Nicanor Parra, DLit. '91 hon. (Chile), a 97-year-old physicist and poet, has been awarded the 2011 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the highest literary honor in the Spanish-speaking world. Parra, who will receive the Prize in Spain on April 23, studied physics at Brown from 1943 to 1945.

Thomas Easton '80 (Hong Kong), a journalist for The Economist, won the 10th annual Bastiat Prize for Journalism. The Bastiat Prize celebrates journalists whose writing emulates the great 19th Century French classical liberal philosopher and politician Frédéric Bastiat.

Apurv Gupta '89 MD'94, the founder and managing partner of Physician Performance Improvement Institute, received the Parvasi Award in New Delhi, India. The award is given to non-resident Indians for outstanding achievements in their field and for their contributions to the development of India and their adopted country.

Christina Paxson Named Brown's 19th President

Brown University President Elect Christina Paxson

On March 2, the Brown Corporation—the governing body of the University—elected Christina Paxson the 19th President of the University. President-elect Paxson, currently the Hughes Rogers Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and the dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, will succeed President Ruth Simmons on July 1.

The Plan for Academic Enrichment

India Initiative Launches at Brown
Brown recently launched the India Initiative with a gift of $6 million from an international parent. Under the leadership of the Sol Goldman Professor of International Studies and the Social Sciences Ashutosh Varshney, the initiative will have two profiles, one research-related and the other dealing with India's public sphere and policy debates. The initiative will be based at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Year of China at Brown

On February 28, a number of the social scientists studying urban China participated in an international conference at Brown. The conference, titled "China Cities After Socialism," was part of the University's Year of China initiative. Organized by S4 and the Urban Studies Program, it was held in the Joukowsky Forum at the Watson Institute for International Studies and supported by the Grace Yue '88 and John So '87 China Urban Studies Fund.

Ways to Make Gifts to Brown from Selected Countries

The United Kingdom
Donors may send funds through the Brown University Charitable Trust in the United Kingdom. As a charity registered in both the United Kingdom and the United States, it enables UK taxpayers to obtain some UK tax relief. Brown also receives additional funds from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs currently equal to 28 percent of the original donation. For example, a donor's £10,000 gift yields £12,800 for Brown. Europe
If you reside in one of the following countries, you can make a gift to Brown and benefit from the tax advantages provided in your country: Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Switzerland. Transnational Giving Europe (TGE) enables donors in these participating countries to facilitate gifts to Brown University Charitable Trust, our registered charity in the United Kingdom.

After making a gift to the TGE national foundation partner in your country and pending mutual approval by the partner foundations involved, your gift would then be transferred to our UK-based charitable foundation for the ultimate benefit of Brown University. A fee is involved with the processing and transfer of your gift.

Korea
Donors may send up to US$50,000 per year overseas by reporting to one of the foreign exchange banks in Korea, such as the Korea Exchange Bank, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, etc. upon remittance of funds. Brown in Davos

Brown in Davos
During the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Brown Trustees, including Tanya Godrej Dubash '91 (India) and Theresia Ranzetta '90, co-hosted the University's third annual reception. It was staffed by Vice President for International Advancement Ron Margolin and Regional Directors Vijay Chitnis '94 and Geoffrey Kirkman '91. More than 50 alumni/ae, parents, and friends attended the reception.

World Economic Forum IdeasLab

This year, Brown faculty members—Professor of Anthropology Susan Alcock, Professor of Neuroscience John Donoghue PHD '79, P'09, P'12 MD'16, Assistant Professor of Biology Casey Dunn, and Professor of Applied Mathematics Jan Hesthaven—presented their work in an IdeasLab titled "Decoding Data with Brown University" at the WEF. They discussed how working with massive data sets would produce breakthroughs in biology, history, medicine, and beyond.

Brown Ranks 21st for Peace Corps
Brown ranks No. 21 in the medium size category of top Peace Corps volunteer-producing colleges and universities for 2012. There are currently 24 Brown undergraduate alumni/ae serving overseas. In 2011, Brown had 21 alumni/ae volunteers and was No. 25 in the rankings. Since the agency was founded in 1961, 623 Brown alumni/ae have served in the Peace Corps.

Brown Hosts Annual French Film Festival
Brown hosted the annual French Film Festival from February 22 through March 4, presenting 21 French language films. Since 1994, the Departments of French Studies and Modern Culture and Media have teamed up with the Cable Car Cinema to bring films from French-speaking countries to Providence. The festival is partially sponsored by the Sevaux Family Film and Lecture Endowment.

Must-See Exhibits at Brown's Haffenreffer
Brown's Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is listed as one of the "10 smart things to do at New England colleges and universities." This semester the museum is featuring a diverse selection of exhibits, including ceremonial paintings of Taoist deities and traditional and contemporary crafts from indigenous tribes in Taiwan, as well as "Customs, Manners & Worships," which commemorates the 375th anniversary of the founding of Providence.

Professor Chinua Achebe

Achebe Named Nigeria's Man of the Year by The Guardian
Chinua Achebe, the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and professor of Africana studies, has been named Man of the Year by Nigeria's The Guardian. In giving him the award, the paper describes him as "master story teller, thinker, visionary, crusader, incurable optimist and fierce patriot."

Gao to Receive Rodney Hill Prize from IUTAM
Huajian Gao, the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Engineering, will receive the 2012 Rodney Hill Prize from the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM). The prize is awarded in recognition of outstanding research in the field of solid mechanics and is awarded only once every four years. He will receive the award during the International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics 2012, which will be held in Beijing in August.

William Allen '12

William Allen '12 Wins Churchill Scholarship
William Allen '12, an applied math and biology concentrator, has been awarded the prestigious Churchill Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge. One of only 14 students selected nationwide, Allen will complete a one-year MPhil in computational biology prior to continuing his doctoral studies. The Churchill Scholarship is awarded to students whose outstanding personal qualities and exceptional academic talents demonstrate their ability to make contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics.

Brown Students Showcase Adventures Abroad on Blog
Five Brown students received fellowships this year to showcase their multimedia projects addressing international issues on the Global Conversation, a blog launched by the Watson Institute for International Studies two years ago. Over winter break, five students were sponsored as AT&T New Media Fellows, each receiving $1,500 as well as audio and video equipment to document their work and upload it to the blog.

Chancellor Yingxing Hong presents President Simmons with a few of his books

Brown and Nanjing University Sign Exchange Agreement
President Simmons and Chancellor Yingxing Hong of Nanjing University in China signed a general agreement on December 6, 2011, to promote undergraduate, graduate, and faculty exchanges. The agreement is the culmination of several years of building ties between the two universities, including a previous short-term faculty exchange and a research partnership.

Shanghai Theater Academy Performance

Brown Collaborates with the Shanghai Theatre Academy
Five faculty members and ten students from Brown's Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies participated in the Brown co-sponsored Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) Winter Institute in Shanghai in January. Together with students, scholars, and practitioners, the institute explored the physical, theoretical, and theatrical geographies of contemporary performance. The STA Winter Institute is the latest development in an ongoing partnership between Brown and the STA. Artists with the STA visited Brown's campus in October 2011 for a series of performances and workshops.

President Simmons and Jorge Morán sign agreement

Brown and Sovereign | Santander Renew Partnership
On February 27, President Simmons and Jorge Morán, CEO of Sovereign Bank and Santander U.S. country head, signed an agreement that will provide support for an additional three years of Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI). Co-sponsored by Brown and Sovereign | Santander, the program has brought more than 500 young scholars from 75 nations to Brown since 2008 for two-week intensive summer institutes on pressing global issues.
