Dear Brown Parents,

Do you remember the day you learned your daughter or son was accepted to Brown? Almost 29,000 extraordinary, amazing young adults applied to Brown this year making it one of the most challenging admission years ever.

We believe deeply in the unique alchemy of a Brown education. Brown offers four years in a passionate academic environment with world-class faculty devoted to our undergraduates. They soak up all we have and give back, going on to do exceptional work in the world. Our alumni are leaders, entrepreneurs, and confident independent thinkers. They apply exciting inventiveness and creativity to their fields of endeavor.

Spring has arrived in Providence and the electric current of anticipation and excitement of Commencement Weekend is in the air. Brown’s famed Campus Dance is for all to attend in conjunction with celebrating alumni classes.

Brown admits Class of 2017

Brown University admitted 2,649 students from across the country and around the world to the Class of 2017. This group represents 9.2 percent of a 28,919-applicant pool and boasts the most diverse admitted undergrad class in University history.

Brown’s newest Royce Fellows

A talented group of undergraduates was inducted into the Society of Royce Fellows at President Christina H. Paxson’s home earlier this month. These research fellowships enable students to carry out independent research projects of their own design, regularly engage with their peers, and share their new-found knowledge with the wider world.

Brown Gymnastics captures Ivy Classic

After years of close competition the Brown Gymnatics team came out on top at the Ivy Classic for the first time since 1990.

Commencement 2013

Commencement is May 24th – 26th! The campus will be buzzing with seniors and their families and hundreds of alumni back for their reunion.

Brown announces a list of six honorary degrees to be part of this year’s commencement. The list includes Benjamin Affleck, Junot Díaz, Stanley Falkow, Beverly Wade Hogan, Risa Lavizzo-Mourey and Eduardo J. Padrón.

Be sure all of your arrangements are made so that you can enjoy this time of celebration. Brown’s Commencement website includes all of the information you need about the weekend including key events and times as well as frequently asked questions.

Obama calls for brain mapping project

President Obama announced a federal brain mapping project, aimed at conquering challenges such as epilepsy, autism and Alzheimer’s disease. Among those taking part in the project is Brown neuroscientist John Donoghue PHD’79, P’09, P’12 MD’16.

Public health is in focus at Brown

Brown has created a School of Public Health, its third professional school following the Alpert Medical School and the School of Engineering. The Corporation of Brown approved the school, beginning July 1, 2013.

School of Engineering Update

Innovation for an Interconnected World

The undergraduate engineering experience at Brown is both rigorous and interdisciplinary. A modern engineering curriculum provides ample opportunity for design thinking at all levels of instruction and engages with the entire University community. Brown provides its students with tools to take responsibility for their own careers, and develop successful ventures that power and give back to the local and global community. As Brown looks to become a leading engineering education facility, new focus is being drawn to the necessities of this initiative including faculty, undergraduate and facility support.

Brown Parents Program

Volunteers Needed – Please contact Janet Neff to get started.

  • Send-off Receptions: host a send-off reception for new students and their parents in your area in late August – before the start of the school year.
  • Move-in Weekend: parent volunteers needed to staff two welcome tables outside freshman dorms. We provide Del’s lemonade – you offer information and good cheer!
  • Brown Parent Partner Committee: parent volunteers needed for our new parent council. This group works to build and engage the Brown parent community. Become a parent ambassador in your area and help welcome and assist new Brown parents.
  • Parents Leadership Council (PLC): volunteers needed to help this group of dedicated Brown parents educate, welcome and engage the Brown parent community through philanthropy. Philanthropists at heart, Council members often give generously to several University priorities.
  • Parent Athletic Leadership Council (PAL): parents of student-athletes work together on this council to raise funds for Brown athletics and their child’s team specifically. Get involved today to make a direct impact on Brown’s athletic programs.
