Alumni of Color Initiative

The Third World Transition Program

One of the priorities of Boldly Brown: The Alumni of Color Initiative—is the Third World Transition Program (TWTP) Endowment with a goal of $1 Million. For more than three decades and with over 200 participants each year, this program has become a celebration of culture, history and pluralism within diversity.

The Third World Center seeks to meet the needs of students of color and promote racial, ethnic, and cultural pluralism throughout the Brown community. It helps students learn how to “be” on campus, serving as both a safe haven and a place of learning for those who come from very different backgrounds. As communities are formed, larger conversations – often affecting the campus at large – frequently emerge.

One of the Center’s cornerstone programs is the Third World Transition Program, which gives students an important opportunity to discuss the particular issues faced by minority students. With more than 200 participants each year, this program has become a celebration of culture, history, and pluralism within diversity. It gives students from a variety of backgrounds the chance to explore their own unique experiences, share their commonalities, learn from their differences, and build a more unified community at Brown.

Karen McLaurin '74“Students love to talk about race, class, gender, heterosexism, homophobia, imperialism. They enjoy having conversations that give them a better understanding as to who they are as human beings. ”

Karen McLaurin ’74
Director, Third World Center
Associate Dean of the College
