Alumni Spotlight: James H. Lynch MD’03, P’19
In March 2021, James H. Lynch, MD, retired from the U.S. Army after serving for over 31 years. For the last 10 years of his military career, Dr. Lynch spearheaded an effort to incorporate an innovative procedure into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. Along with a longtime colleague from the Special Operations community, Dr. Lynch pioneered the use of stellate ganglion block (SGB) in the treatment of PTSD symptoms – a procedure in which an injection of a long-acting local anesthetic, using ultrasound guidance, is made in the side of the neck around the cervical sympathetic chain that controls the “fight or flight” response.

In April 2021, Dr. Lynch joined his colleague in private practice in Annapolis, MD, where they aim to raise awareness of this procedure for people who suffer from invisible injuries of trauma, including sexual assault survivors and the first responder community.

Dr. Lynch also will serve as the team physician for USA Swimming at the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer.
