Issue No. 5, March 2014

Dear Brown Parents,

While we’re still waiting for the "spring" in spring semester, no one is hibernating on College Hill! Last weekend, Brown kicked off its 15-month celebration of its semiquincentenary – its 250th anniversary – with a community open house featuring lectures, performances, colloquia, fireworks, and a 600-pound birthday cake. Take a glance at some of the highlights from the weekend in our photo gallery. The anniversary festivities will continue on campus, regionally, and around the world through May 2015 as Brown reflects on its past and imagines its bright future. I hope you will join in the celebration.

On the topic of celebrations, if your student is graduating this May, you may wish to consult the commencement web site for information about the ceremonies, events, and traditions associated with this singular milestone.

Many of our students are busy securing summer internships that will augment their academic experiences and prepare them for careers in their chosen fields. At a White House summit in January, President Paxson announced that Brown will provide all students on financial aid with one summer of enhanced support to ensure that they can take advantage of internships and research opportunities, which are an increasingly important part of an undergraduate education.

Best wishes to your students for a safe and enjoyable spring break!

Warm regards,

Rachel Spaulding ’00
